Some women worry that their partners will be unable to provide the emotional and physical support they need during the birthing process, but they don’t want to hurt their partner’s feelings by suggesting doula support. Many partners are anxious and fearful that they will not be able to provide sufficient support for the mother, but are hesitant to admit this. The doula does not take the place of the partner, she simply supports and enhances what the partner is able to provide. A doula allows the partner to participate at their own comfort level. I will be there to demonstrate how your partner can support you in various positions and remind them of the kind of touch and words that you find most comforting. I will gently remind you of your birth plan and completely support any diversions that occur, whether by choice or medical necessity. If medical necessity requires a cesarean birth, I will be there to support your family emotionally and answer questions.
Your partner can relax in the knowledge that he or she has an experienced doula there to help you achieve the birth experience you desire. They will be confident that if they should need to take a break, someone who cares about the woman they love will be there to support her.
When your partner gets so wrapped up in love, emotion, and the amazing birth experience that they forget to take care of themself, I will be there to gently remind them to eat and stay hydrated. Being a support person is hard work and no one wants to miss the main event because they forgot to keep up their own energy.
